OceanDocs
Rodrigues, K.A..
The reproductive biology of Ramnogaster arcuata inhabiting waters of the Rio de la Plata estuary (Argentina - Uruguay) was studied by using macroscopic and histological analysis of ovaries. R. Arcuata specimens were collected from two research cruises of the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) carried out in June 1998 and June 1999. During these surveys, bottom salinity and temperature data were also registered. In addition, information about annual catches of this species in the Rio de la Plata, obtained from different INIDEP cruises performed during the last ten years, was analyzed. During winter, a prevalence of R. arcuata individuals was observed in the Rio de la Plata estuary. In summer, this species apparently moves...

Aristizabal, E.O..
Spontaneous spawning of red porgy was achieved in captivity by using photoperiod and temperature control systems along the year. During a four-month reproduction period females released in average about 0.2 times their own body weight in oocytes with an energy content of 5.71 J mg-1 wet weight. A total of 28.8 x 106 eggs and approximately 200 g of viable eggs (wet weight) per female kg were obtained. The eggs and larvae quality in terms of hatching and larval survival rates experienced a significant variation during the spawning season ranging between 0%-92% and 0.3%-33.2% respectively. Comments in reference to the probable causes of these variations and the need of carrying on with this line of research are presented.

Die Lederschildkröte Dermochelys coriacea L. in Kolumbien OceanDocs
Kaufmann, R..

OceanDocs
Pájaro, M..
Cannibalism is not an abnormal behaviour and it can be observed in a wide number of animals. In Pisces, cannibalism may be the result of endogenous intraspecific factors (nutritional state, size, age, state of development) or exogenous intraspecific factors (food, density, light). Nevertheless, external fertilization and the high fecundity of teleost fish tend to increase egg cannibalism, in particular among filter feeding fishes such as anchovies. In the present work, two important Argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita stocks were studied. The first is to the north of 41°S, and spawns during spring on the coastal and shelf waters of Buenos Aires Province,Argentina, and Uruguay. The second one inhabits the Patagonian region, from 41°S to 47°S. It spawns...

Perier, M.R.; Di Giácomo, E.E..
The San Matias Gulf (Argentine Sea) fishery was historically developed and based on the catching of a target species: the common hake Merluccius hubbsi. There are also other marketable species such as the savorin Seriolella porosa. The presence of this species in the gulf is characterized by its abundance, population structure and biology. The material used was derived from three information sources: fishing survey cruises, landing samplings and record of the fishing activity. The results obtained allowed to delimit a spawning ground and a nursery area. The relative abundance of the resource showed seasonal variations with the highest values in August. The captured range size was 19-59 cm for females and 19-56 cm for males. The first sexual maturity was...

Acha, E.M..
The Brazilian menhaden, Brevoortia aurea, is the only species of genus Brevoortia in South American Atlantic waters, being abundant in the Rio de la Plata estuary. The temporal and spatial reproductive pattern of this menhaden was analyzed in relation to the major hydrographic features of the region, and the reproductive biology was studied by using histological analysis of ovaries. B.aurea is a multiple spawner with indeterminate annual fecundity. Daily spawning activity was mostly in the afternoon (15:00 - 16:00),based on the incidence of females with both hydrated oocytes and postovulatory follicles. Spawning frequency, determined using the percentage of females with postovulatory follicles, was about 12. during November. At this frequency, each...

Bouriga, N.; Cherif, M.; Hajjej, Gh.; Guignard, J-P.; Faure, E.; Trabelsi, M..

Pájaro, M.; Macchi, G.J.; Ehrlich, M.D..
Batch fecundity and spawning frequency of Argentine hake inhabiting Patagonian waters south of 41° S were estimated using monthly samples collected during the December 2000-March 2001 reproductive season and at the end of the March 2002 spawning period. Batch fecundity was fitted to a power function of total length and a linear function of ovary-free female weight with values ranging between 100,000 (32 cm total length) and 2,300,000 (87 cm total length) hydrated oocytes. Batch and relative fecundity showed variations during the spawning season with a marked decrease towards the end of the reproductive period (March). The spawning frequency, which ranged between 0.10 and 0.15, was estimated from the proportion of females with day-1 postovulatory follicles...

OceanDocs
Ehrlich, M.D..
The early life history of hake Merluccius hubbsi Marini, 1933 in the Argentine Sea for understanding its recruitment and population structure.Hake is the most important demersal species in the Argentine Sea. Its catch in1996 exceeded 600.000 t and it seemed overfished. The study of the hake early life history was developed in two aspects, reproductive analysis like fecundity and spawning frequency, and early stages(eggs, early larvae, late larvae and juveniles) distribution and abundance.Hake is an indeterminate batch spawner, wich spawns all over the year, with two peak spawning times, one during winter (May-July) in the northern area of its wide distribution (35°-38°S) and the other in summer (October-March) in the north Patagonia coastal waters...

Khemiri, S.; Gaamour, A..

ABSTRACT The bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix (Linneus 1766) is captured by industrial, artisanal, and recreational fisheries throughout its distribution range. The reproductive biology of P. saltatrix in the southwestern Atlantic was studied using 1,102 specimens captured by the Brazilian commercial fleet between March 2014 and December 2015. The recruitment period was identified from records of juveniles in experimental beach seine hauls carried out on sandy beaches in the external sector of Guanabara Bay for four years (2012-2015). Based on the reproductive indices and on the macro- and microscopic analyses of the gonads, spawning peaks were identified in autumn and spring. The size at first maturity was estimated at 35.5, 38.3, and 37.4 cm for females,...

Testicular and spermatozoal characteristics of channel catfish, <i>Ictalurus punctatus</i>, outside the spawning season OMA
Jaspers, E.; Avault, J.W. Jr.; Roussel, J.D..
Several testicular and spermatological parameters of 48 male channel catfish, <i>Ictalurus punctatus</i> (Rafinesque) were studied during 6 months (November through April) outside the spawning season. Two stocks (a domestic and a wild one) and within each stock 2- and 3-year-old fish were compared. Within age-groups, the domestic fish were considerably larger than the wild ones. In each stock, the 3-year-olds outgrew the 2-year-olds. The testes consisted of a white spermatogenic and pink glandular part, averaging 1.14 and 0.56 g respectively. A significant increase in both parts was noticed in March, continuing during April. One 3-year-old male in each stock was azoospermic, even though these fish had well developed testes and exhibited...

Zooplankton biomass in the reproductive area of the southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis). OceanDocs
Sabatini, M.; Alvarez Colombo, G.L.; Ramirez, F.C..
Total and size-fractioned zooplankton biomass (larger and smaller than 5 mm) were analyzed over two cruises conducted in the late austral winter (September 1994 and 1995) in the area surrounding Malvinas Islands at the time that massive spawning of southern blue whiting was expected to take place. Biomass was rather uniformly distributed in the area and dominated by the fraction larger than 5 mm in which euphausiids and secondarily chaetognaths were dominating in terms of both weight and number. The smaller fraction was mostly made up of copepods. From the high occurrence of euphausiids and seasonal abundance of the several species of copepods normally present within the area it was hypothesised that the feeding requirements of juvenile and adult blue...
